“Weekly, if not daily, a lot of films come out. But sometimes there are also gems that have never been seen on the big screen in the Netherlands at all.” Immanuel Verhoeven Programmer Filmhuis de Spiegel
Cultura Nova, in cooperation with Filmhuis De Spiegel, presents the Dutch premiere of To The North. A haunting thriller about stowaways who hope to find heaven in the US, but end up in hell along the way. The film is based on the true story of Christian Filipino sailor Joel who finds a Romanian stowaway on the deck of a transatlantic ship while on duty. Joel decides to hide him, as a sign of his gratitude to God. Soon a dangerous cat-and-mouse game begins. When his crew and his own friends begin to turn their backs on him, Joel learns that he must face his destiny alone.
To the North received rave reviews after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. A transcendental journey into the darkest recesses of the human soul. A story about moral choices, kindness, compromise, courage and fear.
On Sunday, September 1, film journalist Kevin Toma (Sittard, 1974) will provide an introduction to this film. He studied film studies at Radboud University in Nijmegen. He works as a freelance film journalist for de Volkskrant, and also makes modern music for silent films.
