Bloody beautiful vocal storytelling; ‘goosebumps guaranteed’ (3voor 12)

“Pitou brings controlled and heartfelt pop in which you can hear folk as well as classical,” the Volkskrant headlined above a ★★★★ review of Pitou’s long-awaited debut album Big Tear earlier this year. The combination of pop, folk and chamber music does not come out of the blue. The 29-year-old singer with her enchanting, multicolored voice has an intriguing musical background. On Big Tear, she combines her alternative pop with delicate, classical vocal melodies in fairy-tale narratives, from small and delicate to grand and orchestral; flawless, layered, sometimes wistful but always light and optimistic: Here we are – stuck in the tear / But you’ll learn to swim here… Or as OOR puts it, “With Big Tear, Pitou provides proof that music without muscle can still be powerful. And more than beautiful.”
