It was all a dream
Nieuwe Helden Next Level Heerlen (NL)
It was all a dream is the first follow-up production of Nieuwe Helden Next level Heerlen. Four young breakdancers create a movement performance inspired by Heerlen’s hip-hop culture and the rich history of hip-hop in Heerlen. Through personal stories and authentic moves, they portray the impact and meaning of hip-hop in their lives and their community.
The title It was all a dream is a reference to The Notorious B.I.G. and his song Juicy, in which he describes how dreams come true. Also those of Heerlen and the young people who put Heerlen on the map through their dancing.
Over a period of four months, the creators worked towards a first show moment at the schrit_tmacher festival 2024. By showing their work-in-progress there, they opened up the making process to input from peers and hip-hop adepts. They then used the time to edit the material into a performance by and for young people.
With It was all a dream, Nieuwe Helden wants to inspire young people and make them aware of the influence and importance of hip-hop as a force in the community. The cultural collective aims to provide educational and artistic value and build a bridge between the vibrant hip-hop culture and the youth of Heerlen. Nieuwe Helden does this by fostering an understanding of the art form of Hip Hop, promoting the impact of Hip Hop and being a source of inspiration for the next generation. New youngsters who can follow in the footsteps of the pioneers who made the hip-hop scene in Heerlen what it is today.
