The cinematic virtual reality experience Floating with Spirits transports you to the mountainous regions of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. There we meet Jocelynne and Jaquelyne, two young Mazatecs. This people have lived in this region for centuries, intimately connected to the giant ceiba trees and vibrant rivers – nature that also houses the memories of this community.

Those stories Jocelynne and Jaquelyne share with us as they prepare for the Día de los Muertos, the traditional Day of the Dead. Stories told to them by their grandmother, a shaman who upheld the community’s mystical values.

The Day of the Dead revolves around the spirits of deceased loved ones returning to the world of the living. As soon as the VR documentary begins, we are transported by the imagination of Jocelynne and Jaquelyne to the world of their ancestors. Four nature spirits welcome us and share ancient Mazatec knowledge. Their vision of the world is beautiful, deep and necessary to be heard at a time when our society needs to reorient its dealings with nature. Juanita Onzaga is a Colombian-born film director and artist working from Brussels, Bogotá and Mexico. Her work combines fiction and non-fiction. With elements of mysticism, memory, death and imagination, she creates poetic stories that reflect different ways of perceiving reality within a strong political context.
