Aïta Mon Amour (MA)

An invisible bridge between the past and the present

Widad Mjama emerged as one of Morocco’s first female rappers in Casablanca’s underground scene at the beginning of this millennium. In her latest project Aïta mon amour, she and outar expert Khalil Epi dig into her fascination with the chikhates, the strong singers and guardians of the Moroccan Aïta; a musical form of expression that originated in the countryside and expresses pain, joy and love. Widad wants to make this tradition that dates back to the 12th century resonate in a contemporary and digital context. As a passing of the torch between generations, she creates a musical narrative with Aïta poems and songs; true to the spirit and power of this ancient tradition with guitar, lute and electronics.
