The complete programme for Cultura Nova 2018 has been unveiled and tickets for the whole programme are now available for ordering. Also known is the opening programme for which, as usual, there is no admission charge: ‘Carillon – the flight of time’ by the Italian theatre company Kitonb promises to be an urban open‑air spectacle that takes the audience on a dreamlike journey through the universe.
A six-metre high rotating metal tower crisscrossed by 600 metres of elastic cable provides the scenery for ‘Carillon – the flight of time’. The opening performance of Cultura Nova is guaranteed to be a spectacular show. Kitonb’s team of acrobatic dancers move agilely through the tower, creating a visual story centred around the four seasons. The dancing and acrobatics are complemented by a powerful soundtrack that ranges across epochs and cultures, from electronic music to mantras and from orchestral fugues to primordial voices.
Bovengronds (Above ground)
‘Carillon – the flight of time’ has already been performed in 200 cities in over 30 countries. Thousands of spectators around the world have gasped in wonder at the surrealistic images, dizzying leaps into the void, and spectacular effects. This performance in Heerlen, which is played out 40 metres in the air, not only marks the opening of Cultura Nova but also kicks off ‘Bovengronds’ (Above ground), the successor to ‘Jaar van de Mijnen 2015’ (Year of the Mines 2015), which focuses on the years following the mine closures. This was also the time in which the Cultura Nova came into existence. This festival, which has now reached its 28th year, represents the transition and changes that have occurred over the last few decades. Every year, artists and theatre makers explore their boundaries and succeed in surprising both residents and visitors to Heerlen and Parkstad with their beautiful, touching, and dazzling performances.
